The Weathering Process of Corten Steel

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is specifically designed to develop a natural, protective rusted surface when exposed to the elements. Unlike ordinary steel, which continues to corrode over time, Corten forms a stable outer patina that protects the inner core from further deterioration.

When first installed, Corten steel has a raw, dark metallic appearance. As it is exposed to rain, air, and moisture, it begins to oxidise. Over a period of weeks to several months — depending on weather conditions — the surface gradually transforms into warm tones of orange, amber, and deep earthy brown.

During the early stages of this weathering process, some surface runoff may occur as the patina develops. This is completely normal and temporary. Once the protective layer has fully formed, the steel stabilises, and the rich rusted finish becomes permanent.

The result is a durable, low-maintenance material with a distinctive, evolving character that matures beautifully over time.
